This project introduces a Smart Infection-Sensing Gauze utilizing roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) anthocyanin extract as a natural pH-sensitive indicator for early wound infection detection. Roselle anthocyanins exhibit visible color transitions from red to purple to blue as wound pH rises due to bacterial growth. Cotton gauze coated with ethanol-based roselle extract demonstrated stable coloration and rapid response under alkaline conditions (pH 8–9). The innovation offers a non-invasive, low-cost, and eco-friendly method to monitor wound health visually. This approach highlights the biomedical potential of local plant resources and supports SDG 3, SDG 9, and SDG 12 through sustainable healthcare innovation.
