TR212: GeniusBin – A Smart Waste Management

AHMAD FARIS DANISH BIN RASID UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MARA

Malaysia continues to face challenges in proper waste management, particularly in urban areas where diverse populations and industrial activities contribute to irresponsible disposal practices. Many people avoid touching bin lids due to hygiene concerns or inconvenience, often leaving rubbish on overflowing bins and causing unpleasant odours, pest infestations, and pollution. Weak law enforcement and high municipal costs further worsen the problem, leading to irregular waste collection and environmental degradation. To address these issues, this project introduces GeniusBin – A Smart Waste Management System that integrates an ESP32 microcontroller, ultrasonic sensors, and LED indicators. The bin opens and closes automatically when motion is detected, promoting hygienic use, while an internal sensor monitors the fill level and alerts authorities when full. This system aims to improve waste collection efficiency, reduce overflow, and enhance urban cleanliness. Future improvements include integrating a solar panel to support sustainability and align with Malaysia’s smart city initiatives.
